{"id":543,"date":"2008-11-17T15:48:28","date_gmt":"2008-11-17T20:48:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bhakticollective.com\/?p=543"},"modified":"2008-11-17T15:48:28","modified_gmt":"2008-11-17T20:48:28","slug":"the-reprehensible-delusions-of-guruship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bhakticollective.com\/index.php\/2008\/11\/17\/the-reprehensible-delusions-of-guruship\/","title":{"rendered":"The Reprehensible Delusions of Guruship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bhakticollective.com\/2008\/11\/17\/the-reprehensible-delusions-of-guruship\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-313\" title=\"Sri Sampradaya logo\" src=\"https:\/\/bhakticollective.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/sri-sampradaya-logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"196\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pillai_Lokacharya\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sri Pillai Lokacarya<\/a> (1217-1323) was a great teacher in the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sri_Vaishnava\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sri Sampradaya <\/a>who authored several works important to his <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vaishnava\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vaishnava<\/a> bhakti lineage including the eighteen <em>rahasya granthas<\/em> known together as <em>Ashtadasa Rahasya<\/em> and <em>Gadyatraya Vyakhyanam<\/em>. In his <em>Srivachana Bhushan<\/em> (308-310), Pillai Lokacharya, points out three reprehensible delusions which must be avoided by the guru at all costs. Sobering words for one who would accept the role or title of guru and useful also for one who seeks a genuine guru.<!--more--><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li> The delusions of \u2018preceptorship\u2019 &#8211; thinking of oneself as the preceptor &#8211; a guru should think of himself as simply a conduit of the Lord\u2019s Grace and not as a teacher of sacred lore, this awareness prevents the guru from developing the egotistical notion of being a great and learned person and having custodianship of spiritual knowledge.<\/li>\n<li>The delusions about the role of the disciple &#8211; thinking of the disciple as one\u2019s own personal adherent &#8211; the disciple should rather be thought of as a co-disciple of the same <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acharya\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>acharya<\/em><\/a>.
